50 seas · Mathieu Lehanneur
Exhibition at Christie’s Paris in February 2018 and Monaco June 2018
Although most of the earth’s surface is covered with water, often we only see a simplified and reduced impression of it. The infinite color variations are already enough
to reveal the specifities. From blue to opal green or from black to almost black gray. From the Caspian Sea
to Hudson’s Bay, from the China Sea to the Gulf of Mexico.
To pay homage for the subtlety of ocean colors,
Mathieu Lehanneur has undertaken the chromatic mapping. Using high-definition satellite photography, the designer has selected fifty points across the earth to materialize them through within large « faience » pieces. As though formalizing an aquatic relief, the exact colors are enameled to reproduce the delicate nuances. Each shade is unique and suggests the geographical specificity of its environment.
Invited by Christie’s, Mathieu Lehanneur presents 50 Seas,
a collection featuring fifty works as impressive samples
of the globe seas …
